Sally Hansen Memorial Bird Observation Platform

Ed Richards, of E & S Construction, is working in the heat to bring CALC a wildlife viewing platform on Waldeck Island.         You can see how tall the structure is already and the roof is yet to come. The nice height should allow for good views.     The view from the platform overlooks our wonderful/protected wetland and its shrubby/wooded shoreline offering ideal habitat and viewing opportunities for a wide variety … [Read more...]

CALC Lost a Friend – (George) William Irvine

(George) William Irvine It is with sadness that we join the family of Bill Irvine in announcing his passing May 13, 2016. Bill was one of CALC’s earliest board members when CALC was just still getting off the ground. Bill served from 2001 through 2004. He served with co-founders George Rock and Tom Rensberry and also Dick Loughmiller, Jim Peteresen, Fred Sprague  and John Grix; to name a few. At that time there were very few board members with the type of skills that Bill brought to the … [Read more...]

CALC at the 2015 Blueberry Festival

Our booth at the Harrietta Blueberry Festival on August 1st gave us the opportunity to share our mission with the community.  There was lots of interest in the new Oliver Preserve located on the outskirts of town. We spoke with several land owners about conservation easements. The blueberry pancakes and home-town parade added to the experience.   Rose and her feathered friend caught people’s eye.         Our display boards always look go … [Read more...]

A controlled burn uses fire to improve the environment

The CALC Oliver Family Preserve in Harrietta has the beautiful Slagle Creek running through it and has forests and wetlands for hiking and bird watching. However the entrance to the preserve is in need of invasive species removal and a general enhancement of the grasslands to include more native grasses and wildflowers. To that end, a controlled burn is planned. To understand why a controlled burn is needed, please see Dave Foley's Cadillac News article describing controlled burns. If you drive … [Read more...]

DAVE SMITH: Long Time Supporter of CALC

It is with great sadness that CALC announces the 5/4/15 passing of Dave Smith, CALC board member from 2006 through 2012. Dave had experience with another MI conservancy that was invaluable as he administered two important grants for CALC. He oversaw the Wildlife Corridor grant that brought awareness to the need for bear travel over private property from the Mitchell Swamp bear nursery. This grant was in conjunction with the Cadillac Area Community Foundation. He also oversaw the Advancing Con … [Read more...]
